NBC NEWS and GOSSIP

NBC is apparently not "happy, happy" with "Emeril," because the network has decided to replace the freshman sitcom with leftovers and J. Lo for November sweeps.

"Emeril," which stars Food Network chef Emeril Lagasse as, basically, himself, will be replaced by reruns of other NBC comedies, a Jennifer Lopez concert special and an hourlong "Three Sisters" for November, according to Variety. It will likely return in December.

NBC was initially pleased with ratings for the show, which, while not spectacular (6.1 rating /10 share for the premiere), improved the network's performance over last year in the competitive 8 p.m. Tuesday time slot. Its numbers have since fallen to below a 5 rating, however, and this week it finished last in its time period among adults 18-49, the demographic group coveted by advertisers.

The Peacock has also pulled "Inside Schwartz" from its sweeps schedule, replacing with reruns of "Friends" and "Will & Grace" and an original episode of "Scrubs" at 8:30 p.m. Thursday.

Thursday night staple ''ER.'' After a three-week run as the top-rated show, ''Friends'' was edged out by last Thursday's ''ER'' episode marking the return of original cast member Sherry Stringfield, which drew 26.7 million viewers. NBC won the week with an average of 12.2 million viewers, nosing out an average of 12.1 viewers for a strong CBS roster.

THE ONE WITH JOEY'S NEW BRAIN 11/01/01

OSCAR WINNER SUSAN SARANDON GUEST-STARS AS DIVINE DIVA -- Joey (Matt LeBlanc) accidentally informs fellow "Days of Our Lives" castmate (Oscar-winning guest star Susan Sarandon, "Dead Man Walking") that she will be fired so that her character's brain can be implanted into his own -- and though the diva unloads on him, the odd couple quickly end up in each other's arms. Elsewhere, Rachel (Jennifer Aniston) and Phoebe (Lisa Kudrow) try to sabotage each other's chances to meet a cute guy who inadvertently left his cell phone behind while Chandler (Matthew Perry) and Monica (Courteney Cox Arquette) desperately urge Ross (David Schwimmer) not to play his screeching Scottish bagpipes at their wedding. New Comedy "Scrubs" is a Keeper!

With the Tuesday night hospital comedy faring well in Frasier's footsteps, NBC is picking up the series for a full season. The network has followed up on its original 13-episode commitment by ordering another nine episodes of the Touchstone Television show, which stars Zach Braff and Donald Faison as a pair of emergency-room neophytes.

NBC didn't have to think much before committing to Scrubs. Since its October 2 debut, the 9:30 p.m. series has been capitalizing on its Frasier lead-in power, hanging onto a healthy share of the Seattle shrink's audience with an average 13.2 million viewers. Scrubs also has become one of the highest-rated new shows among adults 18-49, the demographic craved by advertisers.

Another Sienfeld Star Trying Another Sitcom!

Julia Louis-Dreyfus will get her chance to prove that Seinfeld hasn't put a hex on all of its esteemed alumni. Despite failed (or failing) TV efforts from Michael Richards and Jason Alexander, NBC has ordered 12 episodes of the erstwhile Elaine's new comedy--a real-time experiment tentatively titled 23:12, Variety reports.

The series--aimed for a midseason debut, perhaps March--would star Louis-Dreyfus as a nightclub singer in Los Angeles, with all of the action taking place in real time, hence the title 23:12 (that's the time minus commercials). The show will costar Comedy Central Daily Show correspondent Steve Carell and Peter Stormare (Chocolat). Louis-Dreyfus' husband, Brad Hall, is the show's creator and executive producer.

Most of Carson Daly's fans may be young enough to have early bedtimes, but that isn't stopping NBC from hiring him to host ''Later,'' the talk show that will return to its post-''Late Night with Conan O'Brien'' slot at 12:30 a.m. early next year. The gig is part of a three-year deal Daly signed with NBC that will allow him to appear on a variety of programs. (Daly will keep his MTV gigs as host of ''Total Request Live'' and two syndicated radio shows.)

Tiffani Thiessen will appear in three episodes of the
NBC comedy, "Just Shoot Me," playing a new sex columnist
for the fictional magazine at the center of the show.
Thiessen -- an original cast member of the NBC Saturday
morning show "Saved by the Bell" who went on to play
Valerie on "Beverly Hills 90210" from 1994 to 1998 --
is likely to appear on the series during November.
She's also been cast to appear with Tea Leoni and
Debra Messing in an upcoming Woody Allen movie.

ER DOCS LEAVING HIT SHOW

Eriq La Salle plans to hang up his surgical scrubs at the end of the next season of ''ER,'' the show's eighth. He wants to focus on producing and directing movies, like his upcoming thriller ''Crazy as Hell.'' His departure, along with that of Anthony Edwards, will leave Noah Wyle as the only original cast member who's stayed with the show its entire run, though Sherry Stringfield, who starred in the show's first three seasons, is returning this fall....
